How to Calculate Training Volume (Weight × Reps × Sets), With Examples

Training volume = sets × reps × weight. Here's how to calculate it per set, per session, and per week — with examples — and use it to actually progress.

Training volume is the single most useful number for tracking whether your lifting is actually going anywhere. It captures how much work you did — and more work over time, done well, is what drives strength and size. The good news: the math is simple. The formula is:

Sets × Reps × Weight = Training Volume

Below is how to calculate it at every level — a single set, a full session, and a whole week — with worked examples you can copy.

The basic formula

For one set, multiply the weight you lifted by the number of reps:

  • 1 set of 8 reps at 100 lb = 8 × 100 = 800 lb of volume

That figure is sometimes called volume load or tonnage. It's just the total weight you moved for that set.

Calculating volume for a full exercise

To get the volume for an exercise, add up the volume of each working set. Say your bench press looked like this:

Total bench press volume = 1,080 + 1,080 + 810 = 2,970 lb.

Notice set three dropped to 6 reps. Volume reflects that automatically — it fell from 1,080 to 810 — which is exactly why the number is honest about how the session actually went.

Calculating volume for a whole session

Do the same for every exercise, then add the totals together. A push day might look like:

  • Bench press: 2,970 lb
  • Overhead press: 1,800 lb
  • Incline dumbbell press: 2,400 lb

Session volume = 2,970 + 1,800 + 2,400 = 7,170 lb.

Track that session-to-session and you get a clean read on whether you're doing more work over time.

Calculating weekly volume — the number that matters most

For programming, the most useful view is weekly sets per muscle group. Instead of tonnage, you simply count how many hard working sets each muscle got across the whole week.

If your chest gets 4 sets on Monday, 3 on Wednesday, and 4 on Friday, that's 11 working sets per week for chest. For most intermediate lifters, somewhere around 10–20 weekly sets per muscle group is a productive range. You don't need to be precise — you need to be consistent and trend upward.

Two rules that keep the number honest

Count working sets only. Warm-ups add tonnage but not meaningful stimulus. Including them inflates your volume and hides real progress, so leave them out.

Compare like with like. Volume is most useful as a trend, not an absolute. The question isn't "is 7,170 lb good?" — it's "is this week a little higher than last week?" Progress is the goal, not a magic number.
